Frozen Pipes and Property Insurance
Published: 02/02/10

The big chill has seen a significant rise in the number of property insurance claims across the UK. Water damage is the main culprit, being responsible for nearly three out of ten home insurance claims.

Frozen water pipes bursting in an attic can cause a flood down through the entire house, resulting in a very costly damage bill, not to mention the loss of personal possessions and the inconvenience that the damage will cause. When water freezes, it expands. Sadly the pipes do not expand! Returning home to find your ceiling has collapsed and the lounge flooded would be a nightmare. By keeping your heating on constantly at a low setting you can help to prevent your water pipes from freezing and ultimately bursting.

The average payout for damages caused by water is around ₤2,000 -₤3,000. Could you afford this? It’s much easier to take all precautions such as checking your water and pipes, and keeping your house warm during the current freeze. Don’t forget to insulate all areas where the pipes are located such as in attics and crawl spaces. Pipes in these locations are most susceptible to freezing.

The best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray... Even if you are vigilant in keeping your house warm, you never know what could happen during this freezing time. Naturally the problem won’t occur during the day, but when you are up for emergency, out -of -business –hours’ rates. Most of the work should be covered by your property owners insurance. Make sure you read your cover! That’s why it pays to have good property insurance.

The cold weather has been forecast to continue a while longer, and you should be prepared for the effects that the big chill could still have on your house. Taking precautions to limit the possibility of faulty pipes should also include having adequate property insurance.
