South London Gets a Boost
“Help me make Croydon great again” is the rallying cry from Boris Johnson as he unveils a major regeneration initiative for the area hit heavily by this summer’s riots.
Croydon will receive £23m to help return it to its former glory; plans include improvements to the public spaces and infrastructure, which should help deliver jobs and economic growth.
The money is part of the £70m Regeneration Fund set up in the wake of the riots to repair damaged high streets and town centres across the capital.
The package includes –
- £5m to improve the entrances to Croydon, including the transport interchange around West Croydon station and other pedestrian routes.
- £7m to repair and improve Croydon’s high street.
- £6m to improve pedestrian routes in and around Croydon.
- £5m to attract businesses with a three year package of support.
Croydon will also benefit from £50m of Johnson’s Outer London Fund which aims to boost employment and economic activity in areas of London that will not directly benefit from infrastructure improvements related to the Olympic Games and Crossrail.
All of this comes after retail giant Westfield announced earlier this month its intention to develop a third London ‘mega mall’ in Croydon.
