The government's proposed new speed laws are stirring up a good deal of speculation over how the new rules will affect HGV insurance. As you know, a heavy goods vehicle or HGV is a trailer truck that travels long distances carrying goods.
There are currently numerous laws surrounding HGVs and other heavy vehicles, as well as many variations in speeding rules and regulations. The government is attempting to set speed limits for each vehicle type so that they are easy to understand and follow. Right now, new vehicles that have speed limiters installed on them cannot utilise the fast lanes on UK motorways.
These late model vehicles that are limited to a speed of 56 miles per hour must remain in the slow lanes but older vehicles can use the fast lanes. Add to that the fact that vehicles which weigh over 7.5 tonnes are limited to 60 mph now and the amount of confusion among police and drivers alike is overwhelming.
If the new laws take effect all vehicles that have the ability to carry eight or more passengers that weigh between 3.5 tonnes and 7.5 tonnes, cannot travel more than 60 miles per hour. This will include buses, lorries, coaches and minibuses. It will make it much easier for drivers to travel within the speed limits and will also make it simpler for police patrol cars to know if a vehicle is speeding.
HGV insurance rates will be affected because the premiums will be reduced for those drivers who comply with the new laws. In other words, maintaining a clean driving record will result in less expensive insurance.
