Truck Insurance - Is it the Only Insurance You Need?
Published: 15/01/10

All truckers and owners of truck companies are aware of the fact that they need adequate truck insurance. This should be common knowledge whether you own a single truck or a large company with a fleet of trucks.

It is now alarming to find that many accidents are actually not occurring on the roads, and instead are occurring due to the terrible weather conditions and the accidents that truck drivers themselves are having, when they enter and leave their vehicles.

This has led us to the question of whether large companies and drivers have adequate personal health cover, and top quality accident at work cover. Some of the many common accidents, which are also avoidable, stem from drivers slipping and falling out of the cabs.

With health and safety being of utmost importance, perhaps it has come time to retrain truck drivers in regards to entering and leaving the vehicle in the appropriate manner. If these incidents continue to increase, there will be no drivers left to continue the work, as they will all be injured in preventable accidents.

Although the weather and the environment also play an important role, common slips and trips that have recently occurred include:

• Serious injuries sustained when jumping from the cab to the ground
• Slipping due to holding items as they are entering or leaving the cab
• Slips in the area directly behind the cab, where drivers have lost their footing

As mentioned previously, the weather conditions do also have a crucial part to play in these types of accidents, and are actually causing them to rise quite drastically. To ensure accidents are kept to a minimum, it is important for drivers to clean the footholds and steps, and keep them free from snow, rain and sleet. Extra caution needs to be taken by truck drivers when they are leaving their cabs in these weather conditions.

For large truck companies, it may be time to have a close look at your truck insurance and other insurance policies you may have taken out, to see if they are indeed adequate.
